You kind of have to compare this to the risk of dying by other means of travel as well. So assuming your Wizard has full health, it would take 6 mishaps in a row to reduce you to 0HP, with a further 3 to kill you outright. And when you take the worst parts of any spell or ability and lay them out like you have, anything will seem like a bad idea.ĮDIT: Doing the maths, 3d10 will average to 16 or 17 damage with each mishap. So yes, it is possible that anything other than a permenant circle or associated object teleport can result in instant death, but statistically that isn't going to happen. Add to that knowing some teleportation circles for convenience, and you've got a very powerful spell that can save time (from travelling) and save lives. Sure, teleporting IN to the BBEG's lair is a bad idea, and the odds of mishaps goes up significantly, but as a utility spell for saving everyone's lives, it's almost unparalleled in it's effectiveness. A 5% chance to take damage each time? I'll take that over being slaughtered by an ancient dragon or lich or something similar. Almost certainly, you will have an associated item that can get you to somewhere with no mishaps, and failing that, you've got very familiar locations to fall back on. This, to me, is the complete opposite of causing a TPK - in fact, it's one of the few spells that can get an entire party out of a shitty situation instantly. This spell instantly transports you and up to eight willing creatures of your choice that you can see within range, or a single object that you can see within range, to a destination you select.
